Autumn is the best time of year to plant your spring flower bulbs to get the well established. Here are some top tips I have put together to help you get the best results.
When purchasing your spring bulbs be sure you check what size the plant will grow and how much space is needed you may be surprised.
Adding grit the the bottom of the hole you have dug for your bulb, this adds drainage to prevent the risk of rot over winter.
Plant bulbs close together in groups for the best effect come spring time - why not try mixing them using contrasting colours? Mix Yellow and Red Tulips for a bold and bright look, or go for a more peaceful look with Purple, Pink and White.
Using miniature bulbs in smaller gardens is a great way to create a colourful display without taking up too much room.
Crocus, Iris and Scillas are great in small pots for the patio or even balcony.
Remember when planting your bulbs that the larger the bulb the deeper the hole should be. I personally try to do the hole about three times the height of the bulb.
Just like most plants it is best to remove any dead heads once the bulb has finished flowering.
There are many speculations on what is the best thing to do with the leaves after flowering, some like to tie them, some chop them down, I personally prefer to leave them to die down naturally.
