The World’s Leading Volunteer Movement For Women And Girls Launched In Milton Keynes Yesterday With The New Group Receiving Its Charter From Soroptimist International Of Great Britain & Ireland At The Doubletree By Hilton Hotel At Stadiummk.
Speaking at the event, Francesca Skelton, High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire said, “Soroptimists will provide an important platform for the voice of women in Milton Keynes. As the fastest growing city in the UK, Milton Keynes is coming of age, developing its status as an international influencer: a position that will be strengthened by the voice of Soroptimist International who reflect the values of the new city in thinking differently, working co-operatively and in partnership. Soroptimists seek to inspire action and transform lives, which mirrors the way Milton Keynes always seeks to be – changing and challenging, engaging and transformational.’
The launch of the new group represents a great opportunity for women across Milton Keynes to join almost 90,000 other women around the globe in working for a world where each woman and girl can exercise her choices, such as participating in politics, getting an education, having an income, and living in societies free from violence and discrimination.
Soroptimist International of Great Britain & Ireland is an organisation of Special Consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. This is in addition to the General Consultative status held by the umbrella organisation Soroptimist International as a recognised Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) representing women from all over the world.
Despite its international perspective, Soroptimist International Milton Keynes will be bringing its focus to the very real, but global issues, which affect women locally. Angie Novell, the new club President said, “Soroptimists are not afraid to tackle the less glamourous and more challenging issues which affect and hinder women locally. From homelessness to trafficking and domestic violence; FGM to opportunities to work and support their families. We are there not just to raise funds, but through our skills, networks and influence, provide practical support to local charities and support organisations. We also hope to celebrate and highlight the economic, political and social achievements of women, and raise awareness of work still to be done to build a better world for women and girls. For us, that starts here in MK.”
Federation President of Soroptimist International, Jenny Vince said, ‘It is always a great pleasure to charter a club. Soroptimism will allow all the women and girls in Milton Keynes to have a global voice through our special consultative status at the United Nations. Our clubs offer friendship, being able to serve and make a difference to others locally and internationally.’
The launch of Soroptimist International Milton Keynes was attended by over 60 female achievers from across the city to celebrate their charter launch day. Women interested in joining the new Milton Keynes group, should contact the Secretary by email at soroptimistsMK@gmail.com.
