Championship Decider Washed out but Reserves clinch runners up.

Monmouth Town’s potential championship decider at Dinas Powys fell foul to freak weather as the match referee called the game off 15 minutes before kickoff leaving the Kingfishers kicking their heels and seeing Tata Steel climb to within two points.

The Town’s footballers will have to do it all over again travelling to Wenvoe on Wednesday 25th before hosting  Dinas Powys this Saturday (28th, kick off 2.30) knowing that a win and a draw will make certain of silverware.

The Town’s reserves already booked their places at the Welsh League presentation dinner with a win at Cwmbran Celtic which confirmed their runners’ up spot – a remarkable achievement given their travails last time out and all credit to the players and the management team. An overhead kick from Ashley Ford and a great run and  finish from George Ryley enough to seal the 2 – 1 win while Andrew Rogers could afford to smash a late penalty against the bar.

The Town’s final game against Dinas Powys will be rearranged for May 2nd but this Saturday’s game is followed by a the Kevin Johnson Charity Shield game involving The Dads of the young Kingfishers in aid of St David’s hospice kick off 5.30.

Net gate receipts from the game will donated to the charity and the day promises to be fun filled after the seriousness of the game which would decide the Welsh league Division Two title.

Town chairman Lee Robson urged the town to support both causes “ Our lads deserve a huge turnout for Saturday having been top of the table all year in a  very competitive division. Landing top level welsh football for this team and the town is a great achievement and it’d be great to get a big crowd to cheers us on the final stretch. It will also swell the coffers of a great local charity!”
