Kingfishers close in on title.
Newly promoted Monmouth Town travel to Dinas Powys on Saturday next, looking for the win that could seal the title, if results go for them. But, a win followed by a draw next Wednesday (25th) at lowly Ely Rangers will set up a Champion’s homecoming on 28th April. Town were without a game last Saturday taking a well-earned rest but will look to end the season on a high with three more goals needed to rack up 100 goals; the first time a Gwent side has managed the feat at Welsh League level.
Club Chairman Lee Robson is hoping for a day to celebrate on the final Saturday of the season; “It would be great to clinch the title this week and leave us free to celebrate on the final day with an event that everyone in Town can share. Promotion is a great achievement but it's always nice to have some silverware to show off and to cement our place as Monmouthshire’s number one club is simply magnificent. First division football with the likes of Barry Town visiting us is just great for the Town and for our youngsters to aspire to.”
Meanwhile, the reserves were looking to grab a runner up spot in the reserve division after finishing last but one last year. Robson continued “Sean Keane and Andy Philpotts have worked wonders with a young set of lads and they should all be proud of their achievement. It’s the hardest job in the club and from week to week it’s different players. We’ve been trying to get a genuine squad system for years rather than two teams and Sean and Andy have helped make it happen.”
The reserves at are home this Saturday v Risca ko 2.30pm.
If you want to come along and cheer Monmouth Town F.C. on towards the Welsh League Division 2 championship, then their match with Dinas Powys starts at 2.30pm at their Murch Field ground, just outside Cardiff.
