Even though the word didn’t officially exist before 2009, the staycation is getting more popular. partly for economic reasons, partly because it is less stressful. Holiday time is precious and hanging around in airports and having possibly two days of your holiday spent in travelling and queues, well you get the picture. Granted the weather can’t always be guaranteed but that’s now becoming true of most places not just Monmouthshire.
The Wye Valley is the birthplace of British tourism and the first package holidays were along the Wye, travelling on boats between Ross and Chepstow with Monmouth being the stop off point. Having a holiday where you live gives a whole new perspective to the area. All those things you would do if you weren’t so busy can now be done and the joy is that next time you fancy that again, you know it is on your door step and not the other side of the world.
How about canoeing down the Wye and stopping for a leisurely lunch at Symonds Yat or Redbrook. Spending the day in Usk, plenty of places to eat and shop as well as the Rural Life Museum and the castle. Raglan castle is on our doorstep, an absolute stunning location and definitely one for the photo album. If you love horses then explore the bridleways from Whitebrook. Tintern Abbey is a magical place to be and a picnic by the river afterwards and then a walk up to the Old Station for homemade cakes and tea is a must.
Monmouthshire has plenty of award winning restaurants to rival those of the Europe, beautiful gardens, woods and gardens to explore and if it’s heart-stopping adventure you’re after we have spheremania, caving, climbing, mountain and quad-biking on our doorstep. And of course some of the best golf courses in the world and superb fishing.
Stay at home and enjoy fabulous days out .Or if you fancy a sneaky mid- week break with a bunch of friends, so much more refreshing that a weekend break, then check out Hollytree House in Symonds Yat, perfect for multigenerational and group holidays sleeps 20. Call 01600 772929 for available dates.
