Tata Steel 2 Monmouth Town 5
Four goals from the Kingfishers Dan MacDonald and a first Town goal for 18 year old Dan Compton put Tata steel to the sword on a fine late summer day at Port Talbot.
Tata who ran the Town so close last season finishing Division Two runners s up have struggled this term but a win last week gave them reason for optimism and were looking to claim a Monmouth scalp to kick start their season.
Surprisingly the first half was goalless as free scoring Town were distinctly off colour but a scintillating seven goal second half underlined the Kingfishers’ goal scoring addiction and sent them to the top of the divison one scoring charts and up to ninth place in the Division One.
Tata actually went ahead scoring with just seven minutes on the second half clock but three goals in fifteen minutes gave the visitors breathing space as MacDonald, Compton and MacDonald again edged the Kingfishers ahead. MacDonald got his hat trick with a cheeky back heel which infuriated the home keeper before Tata got one back and caused some jitters.Monmouth are made of sterner stuff these days and MacDonald completed his super show with his fourth on 81 minutes.
Town have now scored 33 times in just ten games to give good value for their strong start to the season.
Meanwhile at Caerleon the Town’s reserves maintained their 100% start to the season with a fine 4 2 win, Andrew Smith scoring the first with a far post header before completing the scoring with a late penalty. In between times Andrew Rogers and Craig Lewis grabbed a bit of glory for themselves.
Town, sponsored by WyeMedia are in action at home this Saturday entertaining visitors Pontardawe Town (kick off 2.30) and as they sit 5 points behind the leaders with two games in hand will be looking to enhance their credentials as challengers in an open division.
