At one time, if people thought about Fairtrade they thought about tea and coffee. The Fairtrade movement has grown hugely in recent years and there are now hundreds of Fairtrade products available, including in supermarkets as well as specialist and charity shops. You can now buy a wide range of Fairtrade foodstuffs, beauty products, clothes, cleaning products and even roses and footballs!

This weekend the Wales Fair Trade Fair comes to Abergavenny on Sunday 6th October. Martha Musonza Holman and her husband Dave are the driving forces behind this annual event (previously known as the World Trade Fair). Their organisation Love Zimbabwe (www.lovezimbabwe.co.uk) will be there with a stall selling beautiful crafts made by people in Zimbabwe. Alongside will be a wide range of other groups involved in Fair Trade in Abergavenny and beyond.

There will be live music throughout the day, including drumming and singing from local group Abercapella, and from children from local schools who are taking part in a Fairtrade song competition.

Come along at 10am to see the Mayor of Abergavenny and Steve Jenkins from Monmouth Town Football Club open the festivities – and perhaps there’ll be a contribution from our local poet? Or drop in anytime before 5pm to do a spot of Fairtrade shopping and have a cup of Fairtrade tea or coffee! Why not arrange to meet a friend there? You’ll be sure of a good time whatever the weather.
