The Pot Kiln - Under the direction of Mike Robinson
Think of a traditional country pub that is quintessentially English in character and setting, serving creative and innovative food that is not only genuinely local, but typically wild in origin and you will have imagined The Pot Kiln in Frilsham, near Newbury.
Under the ownership and expert direction of Mike Robinson, both a renowned chef and associated TV presenter, The Pot Kiln country pub, epitomises everything that is associated with the sourcing, preparation and creation of high quality, but traditional, British food. Mike's passion for cooking game and wild food, stems from his youth, spent nearby and is a skill that is expertly demonstrated via his pub restaurant at the Pot Kiln, his associated cookery school and through his regular television appearances (currently presenting on ITV's Countrywise shown on Monday evenings 8pm).
The underlying ethos of the Pot Kiln is about maximising the ability to use ingredients from the countryside around us, humanely prepared and always changing with the season. It's all about sustainability, eating more like we used to and about educating people as to just how good wild food is and where it comes from. And the food really is local. Mike knows the provenance of all the products he uses and all game is sourced within 10 miles of the Newbury area.
As a gastro pub, The Pot Kiln is unique and very original. It is after all a real pub, but offers high quality and original restaurant food, in a very traditional and relaxed environment. The high regard, in which this country pub is held, is consistently acknowledged by recognised food guides, leading food critics, culinary awards as well as local people in the know - "The Pot Kiln is the kind of country pub you always hope to find, but rarely do" (Independent).
Through the Newbury based cookery school, Mike is able to connect with people to further teach about the traditional and often forgotten skills and benefits, associated with the preparation and eating of the food his country pub restaurant has become renowned for. Added to which, in response to demand for country style cuisine at local and private events, Mike has an outside catering business, The Pot Kiln Anywhere, to do just this, which has been serving a large number of customers for the last 4 years.
Located in the heart of the West Berkshire countryside near Newbury, The Pot Kiln country pub is an ideal venue to stop off when out for a walk or for a casual meal or a special occasion. Ever changing menus offer a la carte choices, special Sunday lunches or bar food with a twist. Or if you are just looking for a fun night out on a weekend, between May and October, Sunday night is pizza night - a lively affair with chefs serving "the best pizzas this side of Naples " (Telegraph) straight from the wood burning oven in the garden.
The Pot Kiln gastro pub offers you an exceptional dining experience with a difference. It is original, unpretentious, good value and one you will certainly want to try again.

Excellent lunch, warm and friendly staff. Had the added bonus of meeting Mike, definitely will be paying another visit. Best venison I have had in years, worth travelling from Peterborough. …
Having watched Heaven's Kitchen 4 years ago we had made it our intention to one day eat at the Pot Kiln. We finally made the trip from Suffolk to Berkshire …
We have become very retiscent about dining out. Controversially, I am of the opinion that standards have fallen over the last 20 years and menus disappointing, despite the media exposure. …
Wonderful food, fantastic service, great location well worth a visit. Hopefully won't be long before a return visit.
Go here, it's simply superb.
