Do you have photographs of the roller disco at the Corn Exchange? Or perhaps you have programmes and posters of boxing or the ballet at the Corn Exchange? Whatever your memories of the Newbury town centre venue, the team at the Corn Exchange want to hear from you as they seek to share your experiences in a summer exhibition which seeks to celebrate the past 150 years at the heart of the community.
An integral part of Newbury’s heritage, the Corn Exchange building is celebrating its 150th birthday in 2011. To mark this momentous landmark the popular town centre venue is presenting an exhibition charting the history of the building, which has appeared in a number of guises through the last 150 years, from a traditional venue to exchange corn, to a bustling dance hall, a boxing venue, roller disco and its current form, as a theatre and entertainment space.
In all these forms the Corn Exchange has always stood at the centre of and for the community. As such public contributions are key to the exhibition, reflecting this history as well as its ongoing mission as an arts organisation to provide quality arts entertainment for local people.
Corn Exchange is currently seeking original artwork inspired by the building’s importance within the town which will be included in an exhibition this summer, as well as collating memories the public have of the building in it’s many forms, whether these be written, photographic or as paraphernalia relating to it’s past.
