Newmarket Council have decided to drop their bid for World Heritage Site status due to fears over the cost.

The bid, which was due to focus mainly on Newmarket's horse racing history, was dropped earlier this year after concerns were raised about the total cost of pursuing the international recognition.

Councillor Richard Fletcher outlined that he believed the decision to drop the bid completely may have been premature and Newmarket had a good chance of winning: “I believe Newmarket would have had as much chance as many of those on the list and more chance than a lot of them.”
