Over £6.1 million was spent at the latest racehorse sales in Newmarket - the largest amount to date.

Nearly 500 horses were sold at the four day Tattersalls July Sale with an average price of around £12,800 per animal.

The highlight for many was locally trained and owned Newmarket horse, 'Business as Usual' selling for a record price of £483,000.

This year's sale beat 2009 by over £300,000. Edmond Mahony, chairman of Tattersalls, commented: “In the current economic climate, any bloodstock sale that posts increases has to be viewed in a positive light.”
