Newmarket remembers bomb raid.
On Friday 18th February 2011, All Saint's Church will hold a service of remembrance for one of the darkest days in Newmarket's history.
Friday will be the 70th anniversary of the town coming under attack from a Dornier 17z German bomber.
The bomber's pilot released a stream of high explosive bombs onto Newmarket's bustling High Street as unexpecting townsfolk were going about their business in the middle of the afternoon.
Officials reported 27 fatalities and 248 casualties from the raid, plus devastating damage to town buildings.
On Friday at 10.30am, Reverend Max Osborne will say prayers and light a candle of remembrance for the victims of the bomb raid.
Newmarket's local History Society will also be marking the 70th anniversary with an exhibition held at the town library, opening on Tuesday.
