A van driver had a lucky escape in Newmarket yesterday after a huge tree branch plunged through his windscreen.
The 2ft wide branch was part of a tree that collapsed in Bury Road following extremely high winds of almost 60mph yesterday morning.
The driver escaped with minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to West Suffolk Hospital for treatment. A witness at the scene explained that is was amazing he did not suffer more severe injuries and was lucky not be carrying a passenger at the time.
Police closed the road until today to remove the debris from the fallen tree and a street lamp that was also felled by the high winds.
