As more emphasis is placed on environmental responsibility it’s become impossible not to be aware of the term "carbon footprint".

If you run a business, adopting a socially responsible stance can be a vital way to win new customers as people become increasingly willing to search out companies with a positive approach to the environment. Plus there is the added benefit of financial savings.

According to DEFRA: “Low-cost and no-cost UK business resource efficiency opportunities are estimated at around £23bn in value. Total savings opportunities with a payback of greater than one year have been estimated at £55bn.”

If you want a slice of these benefits for your business but don’t know how to go about getting them, help is on hand. Norfolk-based Rev Active offers a three-year package of free, confidential and impartial support for small and medium-sized enterprises along the A11 corridor in Norfolk. As well as helping you to identify areas you could improve, Rev Active can provide grants to help you make those changes.

One company that has benefitted from Rev Active’s assistance is Hingham-based Naked Marketing. A Norfolk graphic design and marketing agency who had just moved into a 19th Century building, Naked Marketing was hampered by the out-dated infrastructure of its premises.

Rev Active identified several cost and carbon saving opportunities and, thanks to a grant, Naked Marketing was able to install infrared heating with wireless controls and digital timers on the hot water tanks.

The savings were astounding; the heating saved £1,547 per year and the timers £1,074. The changes were calculated to pay for themselves in 19 and two months respectively. As well as the financial savings, the changes saved a combined 12.7 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.

Rev Active has provided reviews for 210 businesses and identified £2,236,094 of annual savings and 11,000 tonnes of carbon emission reductions. Around 25% of the businesses reviewed have been allocated a share of £150,000 in grants.

The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills states that: "The UK is the 6th largest low carbon economy in the world and the sector is projected high growth - around 4% annually.”
