Whichever way you voted in the EU Referendum, the result has certainly detonated a political bomb of almost nuclear proportions. If one can cut through the rhetorical mushroom cloud that swirls around the debris site, carefully bypass the Tweedledums and Tweedledees endlessly bashing each other over the head with the same tired tropes, and sit back for a short while, it can be seen blazoned in letters sky-high, in bright day-glo neon, the absolute perfidiousness of our political system and the entities passing for our elected MPS.
As they slither hither and thither in their quest for power, dispatching once firm allies with dark sticky blades, egged on by the most appalling media hounds baying, one does wonder whether, irrespective of if we stay in or out of Europe, we need to change the way politics is done in the UK., let alone the EU.
Our parliament is elected by us, the people, and is there to serve us, the people. It is not there to satisfy the greedy needs of career politicians. However, one must acknowledge that the type of human that succeeds and survives in The House, must be exactly that same scheming, murderous little piece of vermin. It would be nice to know that the earnest, well intentioned local MP has some weight in the house, and many backbenchers are hardworking and honest. However, all MPs become institutionalized to Parliaments ways’ and I honestly think they lose the plot, or have some of their brain removed when they get their seat.
What that means for us is, whether we stay in the EU or not, whether we like our MPs or not, unless political reform is demanded, we will be ruled by exactly the same people as before, just with different masks.
Perhaps, come the General Election, and there will be one soon, given the speed of the fallout, we the people might demand electoral reform on someone’s manifesto and, if we want a less ‘Game of Thrones’ Parliament, it is our responsibility to examine the candidates, question the political parties, think and then turn out, in the same numbers we did on 23rd June, and vote for better, fairer and more responsible government.
