The High Sheriff of Shropshire, leader of Shropshire Council and Mayor of Oswestry were among special guests at the Guildhall in Oswestry last night, to congratulate The New Saints for their performance last season, winning both the league title and Welsh Cup.

Councillor Martin Bennett invited The New Saints football club to the Guildhall to congratulate them on bringing the Welsh Premier League and Welsh Cup titles to the town.  Other special guests to commend the club on the evening were the high sheriff of Shropshire, John Abram and leader of Shropshire Council, Keith Barrow and his wife councillor Joyce Barrow.

A total of 30 of The New Saints players, coaches and management team, proudly displayed the two title trophies for the mayor and mayoress to admire in the Guildhall function room on Tuesday evening.

Councillor Bennett said: “It’s a great achievement for the town’s football team to have won both Welsh titles.  It is certainly something the town should be proud of.  It was wonderful to meet with the players and to hear their enthusiasm at playing football here in Oswestry, as well as getting the chance to lift the two trophies myself.”

Councillor Bennett took the opportunity to wish the players luck with the forthcoming Champions League draw, taking place on 25 June in Nyon, where The New Saints will find out who they will face in the first qualifying round of the European competition.

“I look forward to visiting Park Hall stadium to watch the first match of the new season” added Councillor Bennett.
