Punting is a fantastic way to explore the River Thames and view Oxford from a different vantage point. It’s also great for providing entertainment to the locals who, from the sidelines, quietly watch a slightly inebriated visitor attempt it for the first time!

Joking aside, whether you’ve lived in or near Oxford all your life, you’re a student at either of our fantastic universities or you’re spending a romantic getaway here, you absolutely must go and have a punt! There are 3 main places to choose from when hiring your punt; they all charge a similar amount, but can offer different add-ons and alternative routes ranging from short trips to day-long excursions.

The Magdalen Bridge Boathouse offer punts, rowing boats and pedalos from £20/hour and offer a chauffeur service if you don’t fancy being captain for the day up and down the River Cherwell. Pre-ordered picnics are also available. They can even cater for Hen parties, should you and your bridesmaids fancy a more relaxed and tranquil experience that will be remembered forever - don’t forget to take your camera!

Opening Times:

They are open 7 days a week from the 1st of February (weather permitting) to the 30th of November, between 9.30am – 9.00pm (or 1 hour before sunset).

Prices:

Their boats take up to 5 people and cost £20.00 per hour - 7 days a week.

Booking:

You do not have to book in advance, but on a busy weekend day it is advisable.

Salter’s Steamers are also £20/hour and can offer a chauffeur service so that you can sit back and relax with a lovely glass of champers along the River Thames! It would be a lovely way to surprise your beloved on their Birthday/on your anniversary! Imagine getting engaged onboard a punt whilst meandering down the Thames… sorry, we’re getting carried away!

Opening: Easter to October, weather dependant

Cherwell Boathouse are the cheapest with prices starting at £15/hour, £75/day but what you save on price you certainly don’t miss out on style or service whilst exploring the River Cherwell! What’s more, you can top off your day on the water with a spot of lunch or dinner at their idyllic award winning waterside restaurant! Very swish and certainly worthy of a Facebook status update!

Opening hours: 10am til dusk, mid-March to mid-October.

NB Most boathouses require a deposit in advance too.
