The excellent Schubertiade weekend held at Rhosygilwen each Autumn has become a firm favourite for classical music fans and this year’s event is set to be superb.
Classical all weekend
From Friday, October 23rd to Sunday the 25th, there is a full programme of the best classical music presented by top conductors and performers.
On the Friday evening Henry Ward, conductor and Helen Jefferson, leader, with the Teifi Chamber Orchestra, present a selection of works from Schubert, Mozart and Rachmaninoff .
The programme includes Schubert’s Overture in the Italian Style, D.590; Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A, featuring Lee Mottram on clarinet; and Rachmaninoff Songs with Anna Koukoullis, soprano and Henry Ward on piano. The evening concludes with The Schubert Melodram: Abschied von der Erde and the Symphony No. 4 in c minor “Tragic”.
On Saturday, October 24th, Llyr Williams (piano) and Welsh Bard Ceri Wyn Jones present an evening of a specially commissioned work and Schubert’s piano sonatas by Llyr.
Ceri Wyn Jones will present ‘Poems and other acute observations by a bard’ -- in Welsh and English.
Llyr Williams will play the Piano Sonata in D Major D850 and the Piano Sonata in Bb D960.
All is set to be a fantastic day out on the Sunday, October 25th. The day begins at 1pm with lunch (booking essential) and continues in the afternoon with Schubert’s Shepherd on the Rock, with Llyr Williams (piano), Anna Koukoullis (soprano), Lee Mottram (clarinet).
My Kingdom of the Cross, a modern Schubertian play with kings and priests, by Lewis Davies, will be staged in the afternoon.
Following a break for tea, festival goers can enjoy The Wihan String Quartet playing Janacek, Dvorak and Schubert (Death and the Maiden). And at 8pm there will be a screening of a new film
– A Beethoven Journey, which features Leif Ove Andsnes.
All in all a great weekend for lovers of classical music.
