Youngsters in Richmond borough hoping to follow in the foot-steps of past Olympic boxing medallists such as Anthony Ogogo and Amir Khan will soon be offered the opportunity to fulfil their talent and passion as work begins on a new boxing club in Twickenham.
A combined project between Richmond Council and The Twickenham Brunswick Club for Young People, an independent, volunteer run youth club, work is now underway on the site of a redundant scout hut next to the current youth club building.
The new building will allow the club to expand on it's current 40 young members and introduce girls for the first time. The facility will also be used by the Coucil's Youth Offending Team in addition to being offered to local schools.
speaking recently, Cllr Christine Percival, Cabinet Member for Education, Youth and Children’s Services, said:
“The Twickenham Brunswick Club for Young People has long been a valuable resource for the borough’s youth, offering a variety of sports activities and classes from table tennis to boxing.
“The construction of the new boxing club will provide the young people that currently attend with a much improved and purpose-built facility, and will, in addition, allow the club to expand and offer its services to even more people. These improvements will allow the club to become an Amateur Boxing Association London regional training centre.”
Chairman and President of the Twickenham Brunswick Club, Doug Orchard, added:
“The club committee and its members are extremely grateful to Richmond Council and its officers for the help and assistance that they have given towards the building of the new boxing section, which will be of benefit to all.
“The club continues to progress and also has a thriving table tennis section. The new boxing building will enable the club to provide excellent modern facilities for young people and we look forward to its completion.”
