Solo exhibition by Liz Gilbert reflecting the significance of time spent by and in water

‘Seascapes’ is a solo exhibition by Liz Gilbert and reflects the significance of time spent by and in water. The works reflect the artist’s life journey in metaphorical expressions informed by childhood memories of time spent on the beach, a career trajectory taking in theatre, TV and film, and the experience of distance ocean swimming.

Gilbert captures a sense of melancholy and nostalgia on paper, in photography and film; small sketches created en plein air, capturing memories of place, inform drawings, prints and oil paintings; measuring time not by the hands on a clock but by the turning tide.

“To work plein air one needs to be alert seeing intently, moving pastel and charcoal dust into satisfactory resting places on a surface is a collaboration of seeing - thinking - drawing- touch and breathing with empathy.”

Meeting the challenge as wind moves clouds, light changes, rain coming in, requires a well-honed skill acquired over many years experimenting from dawn till dusk. The reward is a sense of freedom akin to that of swimming in open water - a sense of timeless absorption.

Gilbert holds an MA in Fine Art Drawing from Wimbledon School of Art and has been a consistent exhibitor in London and St. Ives, Cornwall. Her artwork is held in collections across the UK, Europe, and the USA.

‘Seascapes ‘is part of a series of exhibitions hosted by White Noise Projects, a group of emerging and mid-career artists who showcase meticulously chosen artworks through a series of group and solo exhibitions.

Established in 2017 by mixed media artist Hanna ten Doornkaat and painter Annamarie Dzendrowskyj, the collective curates exhibitions centred around themes pertinent to contemporary artistic practice, and in response to exhibition spaces that surpass the idea of the white cube.
