The new academic year has got off to a special start at Hollingworth Business and Enterprise College, where staff and pupils opened their brand new £21m school.
Hollingworth Business and Enterprise College is the first school to be completed as part of Rochdale's £192m Building Schools for the Future Programme. The new buildings and grounds were designed and constructed in association with inspiredspaces (Rochdale's local education partner), Carillion and Ryders architects.
The new school aims to support both traditional and modern learning styles, having been fitted with the latest e-learning technology. There is also a state of the art ICT suite and Learning Resource Centre which also open to the community outside school hours, as well upgraded sports facilities and a new space for theatre and drama.
As school and developers are conscious of their impact on the environment, the new building has designed to be sustainable. It incorporates a range of energy saving features including sensor-operated lights, low energy luminaires and on-site renewable energy sources such as rainwater harvesting.
Hollingworth Business and Enterprise College is one of thirteen secondary schools being refurbished throughout Rochdale as part of the Building Schools for the Future Programme.
Councillor Donna Martin, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Families, said:
“The new school isn’t just about bricks and mortar but is firmly about designing the future of learning at Hollingworth Business and Enterprise College, and staff and pupils from the school have been involved throughout the design process”
“The school’s design brief throughout was to deliver facilities to support and enhance the outstanding teaching and learning recognised by the school’s most recent Ofsted inspection. It certainly looks as though this brief has been met - and more!”
