Carnival set to delight the crowds

Schoolchildren from Bacup’s St Saviour’s Community Primary School, Britannia and Northern  will be marching in the parade at the relaunched Bacup and Stacksteads Carnival.

They will be joined by cheerleaders, Brownies to footballers and a karate club just some of the groups and organisations who have already signed up to help make the carnival a success.

When organisers gather the procession together on Sunday 27 June 2010, it will be six years to the day since the carnival last took place in the town.

A parade will leave Futures Park, tour the town centre and finish at Stubbylee and adjacent Moorlands parks where visitors can enjoy fairground rides, stalls, displays and attractions.

Chairman of voluntary group Bacup and Stacksteads Carnival Organisation (BASCO) David Morris said: "This event should really put the town back on the map. Our theme is a celebration of sport and indeed we have a wide variety of people taking part representing different sports from dancing to karate.

"In the parks we will have loads of attractions for people to enjoy and Rossendale Radio will be providing music and a stage.

"We are only months away now, but with more and more bookings coming in the event is really starting to become a reality.

"We are very grateful to everyone who has volunteered their time to work towards having the carnival back in the town and the publicans who have helped us with charity fund-raising. We have now surpassed out £5,000 target.

"This is going to be a real family-friendly event and we are hoping to put some of the pride back into Bacup and rekindle the community spirit that people remember from carnivals in the past."

Organisers are still looking for entries in the parade – and floats are welcome, people to run stalls in the park and to help with. There is a limited number of places and the final date for booking a stall or procession place is May 9.
