Councillor Barnes became Mayor of Whitworth in January of this year following the resignation of Dave Bradbury as both Mayor and Town Councillor just before Christmas due to health issues. Since then he and the Mayoress have attended a variety of functions and events within Whitworth and further afield.
At this re-election, Councillor Barnes assured those present that he and the Mayoress take their duties extremely seriously, and will give their total dedication and commitment to the roles. He also explained that fundraising would take place for worthwhile Whitworth causes, with monies to be distributed at the end of their year in office. At the end of his speech, the Mayor surprised the Mayoress by presenting her with a bouquet of flowers in recognition of their 43rd wedding anniversary yesterday.
Those in attendance at the meeting included the outgoing Mayor of Rossendale, Councillor Gladys Sandiford and her husband and Consort, Jim, and the new Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale, Councillors James and Jane Gartside, alongside other civic dignitaries, invited guests and friends and family of the Mayor and Mayoress.
Councillor Karen Ruane was re-elected as Deputy Mayor at the same meeting and her husband Peter remains her Deputy Consort; their role will be to deputise for the Mayor and Mayoress during their year in office.
