PRESS RELEASE
On Sunday 7 July, Whitworth found itself by the seaside. The annual Family Fun Day at the Riverside is organised by the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee and, despite being just about as far inland as you could hope to be in England, this year’s event had a distinctly coastal feel to it. The event was held in sweltering conditions and also had to compete with the pull of watching Andy Murray make history at Wimbledon; nonetheless the organisers estimate that around 1,000 enjoyed all the fun of the seaside for 4 hours.
Attractions on the Riverside car park included funfair rides, candy floss and ice cream and three seaside-themed competitions with prizes for the bonniest baby, knobbliest knees and the most glamorous granny. Gorgeous tot Luke, aged 5 months, won the bonniest baby competition and a special portrait photo generously donated by Real Event Photo. Paul Johnson’s knees were the knobbliest, and Glamorous Gran Nancy Law won her competition; Paul and Nancy each won a bottle of Cava donated by the Riverside. Whitworth’s famous Vale and Healey Band played lots of traditional seaside tunes, and there was added fun from Funtastic Inflatables, paintballing and facepainting.
Councillor David Chorlton, chair of the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee, says: “We had a fantastic day and were lucky to get such amazing weather – especially when you remember that we had to cancel last year’s event due to the awful conditions. We’ve had some great feedback and are looking forward to doing it all again in 2014. Many thanks and offered to all who came along on the day, and to everyone involved in the event’s organisation.”
