Rugby history was made this week after Don Williams was inducted as the town’s first black mayor.
His mayoral ceremony, which took place on Thursday, hit the headlines in Caribbean newspapers around the globe as they celebrated the handover of the chains of office to West Indian born Don Williams.
The Jamaican Ambassador to the UK, Anthony Johnson, even travelled to Rugby from the Caribbean especially for the event.
Don, who has lived in Rugby since 1957, was one of the first black people to arrive in the town and had served as councillor to the New Bilton Ward for ten years until he was elected as mayor this month.
Rugby Council leader, Craig Humphrey, commented on the new placement: “In Rugby we are envied for our excellent race relations. The best way to have a tolerant society is to have role models like Don in our communities."
