Mark shows his support for World School Milk Day with the Reception Class at Bawnmore Infant School, Rugby

World School Milk Day is organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and is celebrated in over 30 countries around the world.  The goal of World School Milk Day is to celebrate children drinking milk in school and early years settings on one day of the year all across the world.  This year, it took place on Wednesday 26th September.

In the UK, an estimated 1.5 million children receive free milk every day, with about 40 per cent supplied by intermediaries or through teaching staff making arrangements with local retailers.

This year in the UK, MPs are showing their support for school milk by visiting local primary schools and nurseries between 26th September and 16th October.  While at the schools and nurseries, they will be handing out milk to thousands of children and judging a picture competition.

'Milk can be described as one of the most nutritionally complete foods available.  As well as being a great source of calcium, milk contains essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals for growth and repair.  That’s why I was delighted to visit the Reception Class at Bawnmore School in my Constituency on World School Milk Day 2012.  It gave me the opportunity to chat with teachers and pupils about the importance of the tradition of drinking milk at school every day.

I am aware that the aim of the School Milk Scheme is to encourage children to consume milk and milk products and develop a lasting habit of doing so. I am fully supportive of the Scheme, which is jointly funded by the EU and the UK.

In the words of Sir Winston Churchill in 1943, when referring to the welfare food scheme established in 1940, "There is no finer investment for any community than putting milk into babies.”'
