Rugby MP Mark Pawsey backs Chancellor to provide support for households and businesses by not increasing fuel duty.

Rugby MP Mark Pawsey has urged the Government to cancel its fuel duty increases scheduled for January.

The Government are coming under increasing pressure to cancel the planned increase in fuel duty which was put in place by the previous Labour Government.

Whilst acknowledging the difficult situation faced by the Government, as it tackles the deficit left by the last Labour Government which costs UK taxpayers £120m a day in interest payments alone, Mark nonetheless called for the scrapping of the potential rises which will affect households and businesses alike.

Speaking after the debate Mark said:

“The cost of fuel affects everyone from those living in rural villages around Rugby who rely on their cars for school runs, work and their weekly trip to the supermarket to the local haulage firm who run a host of vehicles and employ a number of people from the town. High costs affect all of us and this is why we need to do all we can to scrap the planned duty increases.”

Mark continued:

I have been contacted by many constituents who have expressed their great concerns at the present price of fuel. Any future increases would just add to the pressure already being felt by those on modest incomes who rely on their cars to work and are already feeling the pinch at the pump.”

Mark concluded:

“Fuel costs also affect non-motorists as shops and supermarkets pass on increased transport costs to their customers. It really does affect each and every one of us and that is why I am urging the Government not to introduce the duty increase in January.”
