Rugby Winter Shelter for the Town's Homeless this Winter!

The Rugby Winter Shelter will soon be open and will provide shelter for the night throughout the winter months for rough-sleepers and homeless people.

It opens on 1st December 2011 until 31st March 2012 so it will be open throughout the Christmas festive season and New Year period!

The Rugby Winter Shelter is a Hope4 initiative in partnership with the National Housing Justice Coalition, the Revive (a network of over 30 Christian churches in the Borough) and DHL Logistics at DIRFT, Crick.

The Chairman of Hope4 the Revd Dr Michael I Bochenski, who is co-ordinating the project, said:

“After opening the Hope Centre in 2010 it soon became clear to us as Directors that the next step must be to try to provide winter shelter for our guests as well. No-one in Rugby should have to sleep rough or wonder where they will sleep the next night - especially in the cold winter months. This winter I am very pleased to say that we will be able to offer shelter, warmth and hospitality to rough sleepers in the town as any caring community should.”

As you will see below the Rugby Winter Shelter will be at different churches each night and DHL, the International Logistics Company, with a local base at Crick, have agreed to transport the beds, sleeping bags and guest packs between venues every day of the scheme.

Dr Bochenski, who has been working to make this initiative happen since March this year commented:

“All the signs are that homelessness is increasing in the West Midlands today. We may not be able to change the national picture but we can do something locally. By drawing on the resources of REVIVE churches we have been able to find a solution for this winter using a network of church halls across the town. It has been great to see this project coming together with so much goodwill from church and community. ”

Most of the shelter volunteers are members of local churches working shifts.
