How is Macmillan helping people in Sheffield
· We raise money to change lives
Thousands of people are diagnosed with cancer in Sheffield every year and they need treatment
and support.
Macmillan can help by providing:
· Health specialists: People in Sheffield already benefit from 47 Macmillan professionals these include highly experienced nurses in areas like lung, head and neck as well as other services that include an occupational therapist and nurse and physiotherapist team providing lymphoedema management care. All of these professionals are there to help people manage their symptoms and to ensure people get the best possible treatment and support possible.
· Someone to talk to: Macmillan is there for people with cancer, their families and friends to talk to, listen and understand what they are going though. Macmillan supports a network of self- help and support groups across the country.
· Financial help: Macmillan wants people living with cancer to have a better deal by telling them what benefits and other financial help they are entitled to. That's why Macmillan funds Citizen Advice Bureau (CAB) officers that provide financial help and advice to local people living with cancer. Having cancer brings extra costs - hospital parking and travelling expenses, extra heating, different clothes. Macmillan can help - last year we helped 324 people in Sheffield claim £122,000 in benefits and Macmillan grants. Macmillan believes no-one should be financially deprived as a result of their illness.
· Clear information: Having the right information about cancer at the right time is essential. Macmillan provides free information and emotional support for people living with cancer. We have one number for our CancerLine, benefits helpline, cancer information nurse helpline and Youth - 0808 808 00 00. It means that if you want to find out about a particular cancer treatment, your entitlement to financial support or just want a chat, you can do so easily and instantly event from a mobile phone.
· Caring for carers: We have invested heavily in the Sheffield Macmillan Crossroads Carer Scheme to develop the service to include caring for cancer patients and their carers throughout the city.
