Once a refuge point for police officers out on patrol, where they could catch up on paperwork and rest without going back to the station, the city centre police box is being resurrected and put to work in helping the public again.
Back when the box was used by the police, Sheffielders knew that if the light was on, a policeman was inside and they could get help. The box also had a blue light and siren, to let people know if police had been called to an emergency.
This week Sheffield City Council is pleased to re-open the box and staff it with friendly City Centre Ambassadors who will be happy to help passers by. The box will become the city centre’s central information point.
It will be open, with an Ambassador on duty, from 10pm to 12pm and 2pm to 4pm Monday to Saturday.
