Tim Kanzler was keen on a career in the IT industry, but didn’t want to go to university.

The solution? An apprenticeship through Telford College, which has led to a helpdesk technician’s role at a local computing firm.

Tim, 20, a former Bishop’s Castle High School student who now lives in Shrewsbury, is one of two apprentices to have been taken on by Bespoke Computing at Stafford Park.

When he learned that it was possible to start his career with an apprenticeship which could go all the way up to degree level, he had no hesitation signing up.

He said: “It’s definitely something worth considering if you’re not set on going to university. Don’t waste your time with a job without training - whilst you’re young you can still access your training for free.”

Tim deals with a wide range of technical issues for Bespoke Computing clients, from fixing a corrupt Outlook profile, to more complex challenges.

He is also developing important practical skills. “IT can be very technical, but it’s a skill to communicate with someone who doesn’t have a technical background,” he said.

And the best bit of an apprenticeship, in his view? “When the whole team are working on something and nobody can find the answer - but then you have an idea, it works, and you’ve found the solution.

“At Telford College, all the teachers are good; they’re very supportive. My tutor Simon Brown has got good experience and knowledge.”

Another Bespoke Computing apprentice studying with Telford College is 20-year-old Jake Tomlinson, from Donnington.

He completed level three media and ICT qualifications after leaving Burton Borough School in Newport, and said: “I’ve learned a lot more on my apprenticeship than I did on my previous college course.

“I started looking for an IT job when I finished college, but all of the jobs needed experience or a degree. I found this apprenticeship and it was perfect. It will give me the experience and qualification I need for my career.

“There is a lot to learn here, I’m happy with what I’m doing and developing my skills. Bespoke Computing is a great company to work for - there is a fantastic team and it’s a relaxed environment.”

He added: “I enjoy going to college for one day per week, and work four days - it’s a good mix. The college part is well structured and it’s easy to see what you need to do to finish the qualification.
