The local branch of the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) has stepped forward to reassure bereaved families that despite recent changes with the operation of Shrewsbury’s Emstrey Crematorium, they are still able to seek support from the funeral director of their choice.

A recent press statement from Shropshire Council regarding the handing over of control of the Emstrey Crematorium in Shrewsbury, and certain cemeteries in the old Borough, had caused widespread concern and Aubrey Kirkham, Chairman of the Shrewsbury & District branch (NAFD), has been quick to reassure people across the county.

“There was some confusion around the recent statement from the council that they were handing over control of the crematorium to a national company, however we would like to reassure the general public that there is absolutely no change in how a family chooses to deal with their own funeral arrangements” explained Aubrey.

“The fact that a national company will run the administration of the crematorium and cemeteries makes no difference at all,” he added.  “Along with other Independent Funeral Firms in Shrewsbury, Telford, Ludlow, Market Drayton and all around the county, and the National Society of Allied & Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF), we have no concerns whatsoever about who runs the administration at Emstrey, but we do wish to reassure every family that they are still able to make all the arrangements with the Funeral Directors of their choice.”

Shropshire Council leaders have confirmed to Aubrey Kirkham that little in the way of change will be noticed and that the new arrangements are part of the council’s financial review.  However Aubrey added:  “Control of the crematorium has been taken away from those in the county which may well mean that fees and charges for the services at Emstrey will rise. Our members’ concerns are based around ensuring the families we serve continue to have freedom of choice, a quality service and good value for money.”
