What are Wisdom Teeth?

Despite their name, wisdom teeth, or third molars, have nothing to do with how clever you are. Instead, their name is in reference to the age that they usually appear in your mouth – adulthood!

Wisdom teeth are usually the last teeth to arrive. Most people will cut four wisdom teeth, although it is not uncommon to have none at all.

If you believe to be in the latter group, there’s no cause for concern! Wisdom teeth are actually one of the most commonly missing sets of teeth.

Why You May Need to Get Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

Wisdom teeth can become pesky when you have a lack of space in your mouth, which is entirely normal.  With 28 teeth already, sometimes our jaws are simply too small for an extra four teeth to squeeze in! In this case, the wisdom teeth will often be removed to preserve your already existing teeth.

If your wisdom teeth emerge at a funny angle, they could become stuck. Sometimes, they partially emerge, with the gum still covering the tooth or teeth, which can lead the area to become swollen and sore.

Other reasons that may contribute to needing to remove your wisdom teeth include:

  • Cavities
  • Signs of infection
  • Bone loss around the roots of the teeth
  • Causing damage to other teeth nearby

Wisdom teeth alone are not a cause for concern. You will only need to consider seeking treatment if they begin to cause you discomfort. Often, niggling issues can be dealt with by using special mouthwashes or maintaining a regular professional cleaning regime.
