If you are putting together a summer workout plan, hot tub exercises provide an excellent, low impact way to stay fit this summer.

Low impact, deliberate movements are an important foundation of any exercise routine. Gentler exercises provide numerous benefits, including reduced stress on joints, improved cardiovascular health, enhanced flexibility, and increased muscle strength, making them ideal for people of all fitness levels, particularly those recovering from injuries or experiencing chronic pain.

A great way to incorporate low impact exercises into your life is through a hot tub workout each day. Whilst hot tubs are certainly best known for the relaxation benefits, they offer a unique environment for low-impact workouts that help you to stay in shape whilst enjoying the refreshing water.

In this blog post, we will explore a variety of exercises that can be performed in a hot tub to improve your strength, flexibility, cardiovascular health and overall well-being, making your summer fitness routine both enjoyable and effective. Here are just a few of the ways you can transform your hot tub into your personal gym.

Low Impact Hot Tub Exercises for Strength, Flexibility, and Fitness

Knee to Chest Exercise

Whilst sitting facing the centre of the hot tub, make sure to grip the sides with both hands, slowly raise your knees up to your chest, then fully extend your legs away from you, making sure to keep your back straight and shoulders down. This is an excellent low impact core workout.

Squats

Standing in the centre of the hot tub, keeping your feet in line with your shoulders and keeping your arms stretched out in front of you for balance, bend your knees and slowly lower yourself as far as is comfortable. Once you have done this, stand up again. The buoyancy of water helps to make squats much more comfortable, alleviating pressure from muscles and joints for easier movements.

Water Walking

Simply walk or jog in place in the hot tub, making sure to lift your needs up high in order to engage your core muscles. This is an excellent low-impact workout for improving overall fitness.

Calf Raises

Begin by standing up straight in the hot tub. Look in front of you and focus on something to help you balance, or if you are struggling to stay balanced, hold onto the side with one arm for some support. Slowly raise your heels until you are standing on your toes. Use your calves to control the movement.

For a more challenging calf exercise, simply stand on one leg and slowly raise your heel, controlling the movement with your calf. Then repeat this with your other leg and alternate between legs.

Arm Crossovers

As you sit in your hot tub, keep your shoulders submerged under water, whilst extending your arms outward to form a T-shape, with the palms of your hands facing down. Cross your arms across your chest, with one arm above the other, then repeat, alternating which arm is above the other.

Arm Circles

Stand in your hot tub with your arms extended out to the sides. Make small circles with your arms, gradually increasing the size of the circles. This helps to improve the mobility of your shoulders, as well as helping to strengthen the muscles in your arms.

These exercises are well suited to a hot tub workout, and are designed to be gentle on the joints while also helping to improve your strength and mobility, and increase your overall fitness. Remember, it’s important to listen to your body when you exercise – if you start to feel any pain or discomfort, it’s important to stop, whereas if you feel good, then you can do more reps of each exercise.

If you have medical conditions or concerns that you are worried about, it’s important to speak to a medical professional who will be able to provide advice on exercise.
