Plans for Meole Brace Garden and Allotment Club’s annual show are blossoming thanks to support from specialist plants centre, Love Plants.

The club’s show will be held on Sunday, August 19 and Love Plants, which is based at Salop Leisure’s Emstrey headquarters, has again agreed to sponsor the prize vouchers. The show is open to the public from 2.15pm to 4pm.

There will be prizes for the top three full and half plots from the club’s three sites as well as exhibition categories, including a new one for comedy vegetable.

Meole Brace Garden and Allotment Club’s chairman Peter Dunhill, allotments secretary Angus McKechnie and show organiser Sharon Skelton with Kat Foster, Gill Jones and Caroline Humphreys from Love Plants and Salop Leisure’s marketing manager Ed Glover.

Tony Bywater, Love Plants’ chairman, said: “We are very proud to be associated with this club, which has some of the best kept allotments in the Midlands. Over many years, when the Britain in Bloom judges have visited Shrewsbury, we have taken them to Meole Brace to meet the allotment holders.

“It’s a special year for Love Plants, which is celebrating its fifth birthday in 2018 and I am delighted with the way the business has developed. I attribute its success not only to the quality plants that are sold, but also to the knowledge and advice that our staff share with customers.” 

Meole Brace Garden and Allotment Club’s chairman, Peter Dunhill, said the garden club was formed in 1947 and later expanded to include allotments. The allotments now have around 250 members at three sites in Meole Brace.

“Our annual show is always held the week after Shrewsbury Flower Show in Meole Brace Peace Memorial Hall and we have 27 different categories this year,” he added.

“Love Plants has been sponsoring the show for five years and it’s a very appropriate link to have. The plants there are high quality and the staff are very knowledgeable and helpful.”

He said in addition to the voucher prizes, club members have been invited to open evenings at Love Plants and have received a discount card to shop there.

The club’s show organiser, Sharon Skelton said the heatwave was likely to impact on the quality of entries this year. “Plants are peaking early and flowers are blooming quickly and then going to seed,” she said. “This year, we might have sweetcorn entries.”
