A new mural is breathing life into one of Shrewsbury’s iconic buildings - and more colourful additions to the town centre are on the way next year.
Shrewsbury BID has commissioned local artist Charlotte Tisdale to paint an original piece of art on the hoardings surrounding the former House of Fraser frontage, which was unveiled on Monday (December 9).
Seb Slater, executive director of Shrewsbury BID, said the mural was a welcome addition to High Street and that there was real excitement about development of the building which has recently been purchased by a local investor.
He said: “We have been trying for some time to arrange an installation on the former House of Fraser building and are delighted to have finally secured the necessary permissions to make it happen.
“It’s such an important building and we are so pleased to see the building now in new ownership and that plans are progressing for its future.”
Lyndsey Stevens, of Seasalt, which is opposite the mural, said: “It’s a much-improved view for us and our customers to look at on a daily basis. Charlotte’s work is so enjoyed by locals and visitors alike in Shrewsbury, and it’s great to have this piece of art here at this time of year when footfall is at its highest.”
Stephanie Mansell-Jones of Shrewsbury BID added “We would like to say a big thank you to the owner of the building for allowing us to commission this piece of art which has made a big difference. Charlotte’s design looks wonderful - it’s really lifted this area of town just in time for Christmas.
“More murals will be springing up around Shrewsbury next year, and we are inviting artists to register their interest in working with us to turn a range of street furniture into works of art.”
Building on the success of the project to paint murals on BT Openreach cabinets, the aim is to create a new mural trail using all manner of items, including signal boxes, bollards and other infrastructure.
