Two key events in a Shropshire charity’s fund-raising calendar will take place within the next month.

The McCarney Cup, a series of short cricket matches with a final winner, held at Shelton CC on Bank Holiday Monday 28 August and Wear It Red on Thursday 07 and Friday 08 September, will celebrate the legacy of former cricketer, friend, husband and father Eugene McCarney, who passed away in 2020.

Established in May 2021, The McCarney Foundation is aimed at children and young people whose financial or personal circumstances prevent the opportunity to play either cricket or rugby and provides sporting equipment, coaching, assistance with transport to fixtures and guidance on sports psychology. Since its inception the organisation has raised thousands of pounds. The McCarney Foundation’s strapline Every Moment Counts is based on Eugene’s initials EMC.

Commenting on the forthcoming events, one of which was postponed from the beginning of May due to bad weather, Eugene’s wife, and the charity’s CEO Pru McCarney, said: “We were hoping to stage the McCarney Cup at the beginning of the cricket season, but were beaten by the rain! We’ve previously generated £5000 each year since the McCarney Cup was first held in 2021 and hope everyone who attends this year’s event has another great time. The aim of Wear It Red day is for everyone to wear a piece of red clothing or better still an EMC branded t-shirt to commemorate Eugene’s birthday and his love of Welsh rugby, as well as promote the charity.”
