Shropshire caravan and motorhome dealership Salop Leisure is supporting an annual safety education event at Nesscliffe Army Camp for 1,500 year six pupils from up to 50 schools in the Shrewsbury and Oswestry area this summer.
The event, organised by local charity Shrewsbury & Oswestry Crucial Crew, will teach children about a variety of subjects including the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, Internet safety and cyber bullying, first aid, healthy eating, safety in water, on farms, around electricity, on railways and many more topics.
The 32,000th child will participate at the charity’s event in June. Local footballers Joe Hart, who is now patron, Billy Jones and Dave Edwards all attended the event in the 1990s.
Shrewsbury & Oswestry Crucial Crew enables agencies such as West Mercia Police, Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service, RNLI, NFU, Shropshire Council, School Nurses, Veolia, Western Power Distribution and others to deliver important safety scenarios in the most cost-effective way.
The annual event is facilitated by an unpaid management team and about 100 unpaid volunteers from the local community who act as chaperones. Many of them have supported the event since it started in 1994 and the facilities at Nesscliffe are provided free of charge by Defence Estates.
Ed Glover, associate director of Salop Leisure, said: "This event for impressionable and vulnerable children provides them with important life skills as they progress to secondary school and become junior citizens in their local communities.
“Salop Leisure is proud to continue our association with Shrewsbury & Oswestry Crucial Crew."
