This week’s Shrewsbury Flower Show once again welcomes the participation of four generations of one local family-run firm.
Aubrey Kirkham Funeral Directors has long been a staunch supporter of the event, with Aubrey himself acting as Chairman of both the show and the Shropshire Horticultural Society between 2004 and 2008, both daughters taking on important roles and wife Ann getting involved too.
125th Show
As the extravaganza celebrates its 125th year, once again Aubrey will reprise his role as Vice President of the show. Aubrey’s daughter Selina Kirkham takes responsibility for running the press tent once more – a role she’s held since the 1990s – whilst elder daughter Leanne Garvey has become a committee member overseeing the Severn and Dingle Pavilions.
Wife Ann similarly joins the General Committee this year bringing with her a wealth of experience. Ann has exhibited in the show since the age of five and along with her father, Percy Thrower, has won eight Best in Show awards. While Leanne’s children Joshua, aged nine and Connie, aged seven, will also be participating.

“As a family we’ve been proud to be involved in the organisation of the Shrewsbury Flower Show for over 60 years now, in fact since Ann’s father Percy Thrower took up the role of Horticultural Advisor in 1946” Aubrey explained.
“It is always a real pleasure to contribute to the show and every year the standard surpasses the previous year. This year will welcome special guests chef James Martin and gardener Chris Beardshaw, along with various displays, competitions and entertainment.”

A valued part of the local community, Aubrey believes passionately in businesses supporting important events and community initiatives, and was recently recognised with a prestigious Gold Award, at the Mayor of Shrewsbury Awards, the third consecutive year that the firm has been singled out for praise by the Mayor.
