Two employees of an award-winning Shrewsbury-based caravan company are to appear on the popular BBC One general knowledge quiz Pointless.
Following a successful audition in Birmingham, Stuart Edwards and Paul Callingham who work at Salop Leisure, have been invited to filming on February 20, when they will be up against three other pairs.
Presented by comedian Alexander Armstrong, Pointless is a quiz in which contestants try to score as few points as possible by plumbing the depths of their general knowledge to come up with the answers no-one else can think of.
Two of the four teams in each programme go through to a head to head contest and winners compete for the final jackpot prize, which can be as much as £15,000. Mr Edwards, a motorhomes sales specialist who lives in Four Crosses, is no stranger to television quiz shows, having won £1,750 prizemoney on The Weakest Link in 2007. Both he and workmate Mr Callingham, a holiday home area sales executive from Shrewsbury, are fans of Pointless.
“Paul and I were having a chat about Pointless looking for contestants and I said that, with my history of competing on The Weakest Link, we should apply,” said Mr Edwards. “Ten minutes later, Paul returned with an application form and we filled it in, making it quite amusing.
“We were invited to an audition where we actually won the general knowledge quiz and then had a camera test. Paul was very nervous before the audition but he was a real trooper and the piece we did to camera was like Morecambe and Wise, which I’d love to see again.
“We heard before Christmas that we were shortlisted and we have just been told that we have been selected for a show later this month.
“We both have good all round knowledge but we specialise in the same subjects, tv, films and music, which might be a problem if a subject like astrophysics crops up. If we get the right subjects, we are in with a shout of reaching the final.”
