Shrewsbury Town Council is delighted to share the success of a recent volunteer event at Monkmoor Meadows, where around 20 dedicated volunteers gathered last Thursday to remove plastic tree guards from trees and hedgerows.

These guards were originally installed in 2021 as part of a collaborative project with the Environmental Agency to slow down floodwaters around the Uffington section of the River Severn.

This event is part of ongoing efforts to enhance Monkmoor Meadows, a project that began in summer 2020 with support from the European Regional Development Fund. The aim of the initiative was to create a haven for wildlife and a space for people to enjoy, enhancing the floodplain for both ecological and recreational benefits.

The event was organised as part of the Great British Spring Clean, which runs until Sunday, 6th April. Volunteers joined forces with Shrewsbury Town Council staff, led by Countryside Ranger Adam Clifford, to ensure the young trees could continue to thrive without restriction.

One of the volunteers, Daniel, a student from Severndale Academy, participated in the event alongside his carer Claire. She highlighted the importance of such opportunities, stating, "It is hard to get young people involved in the local community. Activities like this give young people like Dan a real role and pride in his community."

Shrewsbury Town Council supports young people of all abilities by encouraging them to take part in local volunteering efforts, ensuring inclusivity in environmental and community projects.

Jim Goldsmith, Shrewsbury Town Council's Countryside and Greenspace Manager, emphasised the significance of post-planting care: "Aftercare is a crucial part of ensuring young trees establish and thrive. Regular maintenance, such as weeding, watering, and removing guards, allows them to grow strong and healthy. The efforts of our volunteers during the Great British Spring Clean have given these trees the best possible start, setting them up for a long and sustainable future."

Shrewsbury Town Council is committed to organising regular volunteering activities, aiming to hold at least one event per month. The next volunteering opportunity will betree surround maintenance at Doctor’s Field Countryside Site near The Mount. A yearly clearance of Rea Brook Local Nature Reserve is planned.
