If you have not used your hot tub as much as usual over the colder months, it’s probably about time to show it some love and care.
As we leave the winter behind, spring cleaning is often on our mind – so as well as sorting out the house from top to bottom, now is also an excellent opportunity to carry out some much needed hot tub cleaning.
Why hot tub cleaning is important this springtime
Taking proper care of your hot tub is essential to make sure that it not only looks great, but performs at its best. Not only will a well functioning hot tub help you to feel more relaxed, it will also give you peace of mind that it is safe from expensive repair costs. To keep your much loved hot tub bubbling away for the rest of the year, it’s important to carry out essential spring maintenance.
Here are some of our most important tips for hot tub spring cleaning.
Start by draining your hot tub
Your first move should be to drain all the water out of your tub. To maintain clean water and keep chemical balances right, it’s recommended that you drain your hot tub at least every 3 months. Remember, before you release the water, you should first flush out the internal pipes to prevent buildup of any bacteria that may have escaped past filters. First remove the hot tub filters, add the recommended amount of pipe cleaning solution to the water, and run the jets for around 15 minutes. Remember, you should never run hot tub jets whilst your hot tub is draining or empty. This could lead to expensive damage.
If you are unsure on how to drain your hot tub, read your owner’s manual, or if you need further advice, our team will be happy to help.
Clean your filters
Your next task is to clean your hot tub filters, or replace them if necessary. To clean the filters ready for your next use, first rinse them using a filter cleaner. After rinsing the filters, then take time to let them dry properly. Once dry reinsert them back into the hot tub.
Clean the shell
Whilst your hot tub is still empty, take the opportunity to use a soft cloth or mitts, along with non-abrasive cleaner like Jacuzzi Surface Cleaner to gently scrub the sides and bottom of your hot tub. This is important for helping to remove any dirt, debris and grime that has built up over time, especially if your hot tub has not been in action for a while. Once you have cleaned the shell rinse with fresh water and drain the last bit of water out of the hot tub.
Refill and treat with hot tub chemicals
Once you have cleaned your hot tub, including flushing out the pipework, it is time to refill it. To do this, place a hose pipe into the hot tub filter compartment, turn on the tap and allow your hot tub’s pipework to be filled first, reducing the risk of an air lock building. Make sure your hot tub fills the pipework and then the shell interior, until it reaches the recommended level.
Once your hot tub is successfully filled, it’s important to treat the water with the appropriate chemicals. Most hot tub models will require a chlorine or bromine sanitising solution. You should also treat it with a sanitizer to help kill bacteria and get rid of dead skin and body oils once people are using the spa again. Once your hot tub is up to temperature you can then test for your Ph & Alkalinity. You can find our advice for choosing hot tub chemicals here.
Once you have followed these hot tub cleaning tips to finish your spring maintenance, you can look forward to a spring and summer of enjoying your hot tub. Regular maintenance helps keep your hot tub running smoothly, and prevents potentially costly repairs.
