Work has begun to make a leading Shropshire sports club more environmentally friendly.
The owners of The Shrewsbury Club, a family friendly health club and indoor tennis centre which also incorporates the Hub bistro cafe bar and an Imagine Spa, are investing in a green energy project at the Sundorne Road complex.
Two biomass boilers are being installed to burn woodchip from sustainable sources. They will provide all of the club's hot water and heating as well as providing hot water to the swimming pool.
Photovoltaic solar panels will also be fitted on the venue's tennis hall roof and the roof over the swimming pool which will lead to around 10 per cent of the club's energy use being powered by their own solar panels.
Mark Reynolds, regional manager for Mosaic Group who own The Shrewsbury Club, said: "We are a family-based club and have almost 500 junior members so we recognise that we have a responsibility to limit the impact we have on the environment and help create sustainability.
"At certain times of the year we will even be providing electricity back to the national grid.
"We believe in the importance of supporting the local economy and for that reason the project is being delivered by Shropshire-based Edge Renewables."
He said disruption to the usual activities at The Shrewsbury Club while work is completed would be kept to a minimum and that opening hours would not be affected.
Mr Reynolds added: "With this major investment we have now spent over £1million on the club in the last two years so we are demonstrating our commitment to the long term.
"We want to create a facility that the town can be proud of and these innovations will keep The Shrewsbury Club sustainable for the next 20 years."
The work will be completed next month.
