Seven Drunken Nights is an evening of music and commentary which tells the story of The Dubliners’ career which spanned 50 years.
This former West End show brings to life the music of Ireland's favourite sons 'The Dubliners’.
The Irish folk band was founded in Dublin in 1962 as The Ronnie Drew Ballad Group, named after its founding member. They subsequently renamed themselves The Dubliners.
The show looks to evoke the spirit of members Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly, Barney McKenna, Jim McCann, Ciaran Bourke, and John Sheahan.
Classics performed included The Wild Rover, The Black Velvet Band, The Irish Rover, Molly Malone, Finnegan’s Wake, McAlpines Fusileers, Raglan Road, and of course The Seven Drunken Nights.
My dad (who is himself from southern Ireland) and I have watched this show once previously, and he was so taken with the trip down memory lane he wanted to return.
Last time, an excellent singer and a fiddle player performed the last time we saw them at Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury, and sadly and these chaps were missing, which was a bit of a disappointment to my dad as he felt they really made the show.
The group sang a lot of the fun ‘drunken’ Irish songs and less of the ballads they performed when we had seen them previously, but the theatre was full, and the crowd seemed to really enjoy the show.
The Dubliners have been going since 1962 and were together for over five decades, with different performers joining them over that time.
Special mentions were given out to songs made famous by singers from the band who have now passed on. The group is trying to keep the music of this essential group alive and still doing a great job, giving out an evening of entertainment that the crowds seem to enjoy.
All in all, it was an enjoyable evening, and it was nice to hear some Irish favourites alongside my Irish Dad.
His favourite song of the evening was Dublin in the rare old times. I guess that’s how he likes to remember things too.
I am a PR and marketing specialist living and working in the wonderful Shrewsbury! I often review for the Best of - a fantastic place to find out about all things local!
