Creative self-expression is key to wellbeing, and being able to record your thoughts, ideas and feelings in words is for many people a source of great personal strength and joy. So too the natural world, a connection that we all know is essential for health, both physical and mental.
This day taster course will bring the two together: words and nature. At the Arvon centre in the lush and lovely Clun valley, tutors Jay Griffiths and Mike Parker, with numerous successful non-fiction books between them, will take you through an assortment of exercises, getting you to look, to listen and most importantly, to write.
Jay Griffiths
Jay Griffiths is the award-winning author of 'Wild: An Elemental Journey' 'Why Rebel' and 'Nemesis, My Friend' amongst others. She has tutored for Arvon for many years, and is completely enraptured by the natural world. She is a wild skater, whenever the Welsh lakes freeze.
Mike Parker
Mike Parker’s books always start from a sense of place. On that, he layers acute observation of the built and natural worlds, history and politics, and questions of identity and belonging. His books include the bestselling Map Addict, a love-letter to cartography, The Wild Rover, a celebration of the humble footpath, All the Wide Border, a tour-de-force through the land between England and Wales, and On the Red Hill, his search for the queer rural that won the non-fiction Wales Book of the Year and was runner-up for the Wainwright Prize for nature writing. Originally from Worcestershire, he now lives in mid Wales.
