An iconic new bus station has officially opened its doors to passengers in Slough.

The station was designed as part of the Heart of Slough regeneration scheme and was developed by Matthew Bedward of BBLUR Architecture. The innovative design provides a landmark building in the transport area of the project.

Other public areas being regenerated by the Heart of Slough scheme have been designed by the same architects, which has resulted in a harmonious style designed to lead people from the bus and train stations into the town, making it more pedestrian-friendly.

The building's design was derived from the idea of different wavelengths of light and inspired by William Herschel's famous infra-red experiment. The building features aluminium shingles which create a softly textured metallic surface that changes character under different light conditions.

The new facilities include a cafe, newsagent, comfortable waiting areas and real-time bus timetable information that lets you know exactly when your bus will arrive.

Councillor Swindlehurst, Slough Borough Council’s commissioner for regeneration and renewal said ”The opening of Slough’s new bus station is not only a significant step in the delivery of the Heart of Slough, but provides much improved facilities for local bus users. I have seen the building develop over the past months from a proposal into a reality, and I am incredibly pleased with the end product.

“Visible from the train station, it makes a confident statement about Slough’s desire to keep improving itself, and turns a new page for the town centre.”
