There’s a major boost for families travelling to Solihull town centre to join in the month-long Christmas celebrations – free parking for those arriving 6pm.

On Saturday November 28 the festivities launch with the opening of the German Market in Mell Square, the Christmas lights switch-on, special events in Touchwood and street entertainment throughout the town centre.

And until December 23 parking is free each weekday evening for those entering after 6pm at Touchwood, John Lewis, Mell Square, Church Hill, Marks and Spencer and Lode Lane car parks.

Solihull Town Centre Partnership (STCP) and SMBC have worked together to provide the parking promotion as part of their aim to make Solihull the place to be over the Christmas period.

The lights have been made possible through sponsorship from the NEC, John Lewis and Mell Square management.

Karen Ford, managing director at John Lewis Solihull and chair of STCP, said: “John Lewis is delighted to be involved in the lights this year because they are such an important part of Christmas in Solihull.  We have so much to offer from the traditional high street to the variety of Touchwood, and the Christmas lights will add that touch of magic to what we already know is a great shopping destination for all the family”.

The German market opens at 10am each day and closes at 8pm

Sunday to Thursday and at 7pm Friday and Saturday.

It offers a number of brightly decorated stalls selling an assortment of gifts including wooden toys, candles and decorations, food as well as a traditional German bar where a Bavarian band will be playing.

On November 28 the Christmas lights will be switched on at 5.30pm accompanied by a free Santa’s Grotto, live music and street entertainment in the shape of elf stilt walkers, face painters, balloon modellers, jugglers and much more throughout the streets.
