Originally started by the local curate in Buckfastleigh, the support group was relaunched earlier this year by Tracy Dommett, funeral arranger at Co-op Funeralcare Buckfastleigh.
Having lost her own mother and received bereavement counselling through Cruse, a bereavement support charity, Tracy knows first-hand the value of talking through grief. Tracy said: “When I lost my mum, I found that talking was really helpful. It’s about offering comfort and understanding, especially to those who may feel isolated.”
Before her role at Co-op Funeralcare, Tracy worked in a local school where she assisted grieving students, setting up bereavement groups and one-to-one support sessions. Tracy said: “Grief can feel very alienating, and I wanted to make sure that young people didn’t feel like they had to face it alone.”
The group has become a trusted place for many in the community, helping people adjust to life after loss. Tracy said: “I hope that our space can help people to feel less alone, and that they can find comfort whether they choose to share their story or simply listen.”
Held on the first Thursday of each month, from 11am-12pm, the group offers a welcoming, informal space where those who have lost loved ones can come together, share their experiences, and find comfort in knowing they are not alone. The group is open to anyone in the community who is grieving.
