Rochford District Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment has warned that, unless volunteers come forward before the end of the month, the Friends of Sweyne Park group may be forced to close.
The stark warning comes after the Friends Group had a sparsely attended Annual General Meeting and faces the prospect of having to close down owing to a lack of volunteers.
Since its formation in 2009, the Friends of Group has been an invaluable help to the Council in organising popular community events as well as telling the Council about things that need doing in the park.
Volunteers are needed to help organise events, like family fun days as well as work with the Council to ensure that Sweyne Park continues to be enjoyed by everyone.
There is a desperate need for a secretary to come forward and help. The time commitment is as much or as little as you can afford and it’s a really friendly group to be part of.
Rochford District Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Councillor Mike Steptoe, said: “The Friends of Sweyne Park Group have been invaluable, not just to the Council, but also the community who have enjoyed their events such as the litter picks and fun days. It isn’t just in organising events where the Friends of Sweyne Park help. There have been a number of occasions when they have told the Council about work that needs doing in the park and we have been able to help so it can be enjoyed by everyone. For the Friends Group to be forced to disband would be awful, I want to urge anyone who may be able to help and offer nothing else except a little of their time, to come forward and help the group to continue.”
Anyone interested in joining the committee or who is prepared to help organise events in the park should contact Heather Meggison on 01702 318057 or email heather.meggison@rochford.gov.uk
