Mothering Sunday is a tradition that has its origins way back in Roman times, with a festival to honour goddesses at the start of spring; the idea became part of the Christian calendar as the fourth Sunday of Lent.

Historically it was an opportunity for people – often domestic servants - to return to their ‘mother church’ for one Sunday and visit their mothers and other family members.

More recently, it was during the two World Wars that the tradition had a resurgence in popularity becoming the event closer to the one we know today in the 1950s, thanks in part to the influence of US and Canadian soldiers bringing their interpretation of Mother's Day to the UK.

This year, Mother's Day is falls on Sunday March 18th and thebestof Southend has a range of local businesses to help you show your mum how special she is. Yes, flowers and cards are always well received, but how about going above and beyond the call of duty this year to let mum know how much you appreciate her hard work?

Why not take mum out for A family meal? For fine dining, thebestof Southend recommends the Roslin Beach Hotel, which features an impressive a la carte menu and relaxing views of the Thames estuary.

Alternatively, if you fancy something a little spicier, why not visit Saffron Lounge Indian Restaurant for unique dishes in a friendly atmosphere, or head ‘south of the border’ to Pancho’s Cantina for some delicious Mexican and Cajun cuisine?

Or what about surprising her with a bit of pampering at her favourite hairdresser followed by a family portrait from Jo Curtis Photography?

Whatever you plan to do this Mother's Day, let thebestof Southend help you pick from only the very best the area has to offer.
